City of calgary Water Managed Sites Program

Are outdoor watering restrictions limiting your ability to take care of your landscape? There is a solution, the City of Calgary’s Water Managed Sites Program!

In partnership with the CPCIA, the City of Calgary has introduced a new framework to encourage residential, commercial, and industrial properties to integrate smart irrigation technologies, increase water conservation practices and water utilization.

What is a Water Managed Site and how will this help me?

A water managed site is a property with an irrigation system that has been inspected by a Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor and has been approved by the City as a Water Managed Site for efficiency. During stage 1 through 3 water restrictions, Water Managed Sites are subject to fewer watering limitations.

At Grizzly Irrigation, we are a Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor through the Irrigation Association. Our team provides end-to-end support, including:

✔️ Smart irrigation technology installation/Retrofits
✔️ Comprehensive site audits
✔️ Application and paperwork submission
✔️ Ongoing monitoring & required reporting

Once approved, you can enjoy greater flexibility when using your irrigation system, even during water restrictions (as permitted by the City of Calgary Water Utility Bylaw).

Water Managed Sites FAQs

What Are the equipment Requirements for the Water Managed Sites Program in Calgary?

To qualify for the City of Calgary’s Water Managed Sites Program, your irrigation system must have:

  • An Approved Cross Connection Control Device – Ensures safe water use free of contamination

  • A Smart, Remote-Operable, Real-Time Weather-Based Controller – Adjusts watering based on weather conditions automatically

  • A Rain Sensor, Soil Moisture Sensor, or Weather Station – Helps to prevent overwatering

  • An Electronic Master Valve – Enhances water efficiency, decreases chances of leakage

  • A Dedicated Irrigation Water Meter or Totalizer – Tracks water usage for reporting purposes. Can help to identify problems within the irrigation system

Need an upgrade? We can install these components before your site audit.

How Do I Maintain My Water Managed Site (WMS) Status once approved?

Once approved, you must maintain a 25% annual water savings, based on benchmarks set by the City of Calgary and CPCIA. You are also required to submit annual reporting to ensure you are meeting water savings targets.

Will a 25% Water Reduction Harm My Landscape?

No! Modern smart irrigation systems can reduce water use without sacrificing a lush, green lawn and healthy plant material. Many homeowners still use a “set it and forget it” approach, but with professional irrigation management, you can conserve water while your landscape thrives.

Is the Application Process Complicated?

Not at all! At Grizzly Irrigation, we handle everything for you, including:
